DOWNSVILLE & ROSCOE DRIVER EDUCATION
Driving is the most dangerous thing we do. Each year 44,000 people die on our roadways. Today's traffic is more complex than ever. Every day new drivers and vehicles enter onto our already overcrowded highway system. With more traffic on the highways, laws have become tougher for the vehicle operator. Becoming a new member of New York's licensed vehicle operator population is as serious as life and death.
Downsville Central School's Driver Education program is designed and dedicated to help the student gain a basic understanding of how to operate a motor vehicle safely. It will help prepare the student for the behind-the-wheel instruction and eventually the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle's driver license exam requirements. But most of all, it will prepare the student for a lifetime skill that can enhance a quality of life.
Driver Education is a partnership between myself and the parent. We both need to work together to teach our student driver how to drive safely and to follow the rules of the road. It is also very important for us to be good role models when we drive. Please be a role model to your student driver by wearing your seat belt, refraining from using your cell phone when driving, following the speed limit and all other motor vehicle laws. Students need to practice as much as possible, please take your student driver out for more than 50 hours of supervised driving. The importance of student practice with parents is essential for our program and student success in becoming safe, proficient young drivers. Parents make a difference when it comes to teen driving.
*89% of all teens say that their parents are the most influential in encouraging safe driving
*59% of parents know that motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of teens
*71% of teens are less likely to drive intoxicated when their parents are involved in their driving
*50% of teens are less likely to be in a crash if their parents set rules and monitor their activities
Successful completion of the DCS Driver Education program will qualify the student for a full driver's license (Class D) at age 17 after passing the New York State Motor Vehicle Bureau Road Test.
The MV 285 BLUE CARD issued after successful completion of the DCS driver education program could mean up to a 15% discount from many insurance companies
Parents, please take the time to drive with your son/daughter it is VERY important, set rules and take an active role in your young drivers driving life, before and after they get their license. Please take the time to watch the video below, it is about a father (Joel Dunham) and his daughter (Megan). This is a situation that occurred right here in our area, in Binghamton.
